I am no stupid mouse

It lies there on the cement floor
Watching me as it did before
But—I am no stupid mouse.
Its black and yellow crystal eyes
Stare me down with firm despise
But—I am no stupid mouse
I scamper cross the crumbling walls
I see the way it slowly crawls
But—I am no stupid mouse
That chunk of cheese belongs to me
And I will wait until it sleeps
For I am no stupid mouse
Alas, its marble eyes are closed
Its negligence is now exposed
But—I am no stupid mouse
I tiptoe there to receive it
I hold it close, I can’t believe it!
But—I am no stupid mouse
I take a bite of the soft cheese
And then a shadow covers me
But—I am no stupid mouse
I take my prize and begin to leap
And then I wake as if from sleep
But—I am no stupid mouse
I realize the darkness, holding my chin
I wish I could go back and do it again
Because I am a stupid mouse.
