Over

These last twenty two years have been a blast
Forced to learn, forget, and study in school
I am almost upset that it won’t last
Oh how I will miss this prison, this pool
Of diversity, it went by so fast
They were right in saying school was cool
I’m kidding, I’m lying, it’s time for fun
I’ve done my time, I’m out, I’m done.

Lake Anna

The smeared orange sky looks down at us
Trying to hold up the setting sun

The scorched smell of charcoal in the gray air tickles
My nose as my stomach noisily rolls over in the bed of my appetite

The foggy water gradually lets go of our bodies as
We tiredly climb out of the dark green depth

The yawning sun blankets our damp backs
Like a warm towel right out of the dryer

The thumping of tiny feet run along creaky wooden boards
As boats gently knock on the bruised back of the boatshed

The distant sizzling of the tired grill makes us run faster up steep hills
As freshly cut grass wraps our feet in green straw

The children’s echoed giggles jump on a soft breeze
As I hear the retreating lake brush the sand

And I just smile to myself knowingly
That this is exactly where I want to be

Long Week

This week does hang on the back of my shirt
Wearing me down till I’m bruised and hurt
Aggressively tugging so I cannot walk
Its cuffs on me are firmly locked

I peer our through each cold, metal bar
Looking out at what seems so far
Freedom!  Even if it’s only three days
Oh to escape, restless mind give me ways!

But look!  It’s Thursday, she’s letting me go
The weekend just pointed me to a window
I hurriedly grab my stuff and pack
For I know that the week will soon be back.

Individuality

I wake to a bragging sun in my eyes
And heated rays upon my face
The distant, chlorine clouds and bright, blue skies
An awakening world that I embrace

I twist the doorknob welcoming keen winds
Amid musical birds and graceful trees
The treaded journey I slowly begin
Being pushed by a sudden, eager breeze

Oh heart, what will I see, where should I go
I have no hand to hold, I’m all alone
Just keep walking allow time to grow
For now, I realize, I’m on my own

There is so much life has to offer me
To live, to love, to learn, to at last…be

Comes With the Title

Every day is a constant battle
With prolonged arguments that never cease
The tide of bills makes it harder to paddle
These issues that over the years increase

Unleashed children always making me clean
I never get any time to myself
When there’s a dirty room, they flee the scene
Avoiding me and refusing to help

I slave for their wishes, day after day
I get no respect as I still wait here
Time takes control as youth throws me away
Every day I age in the mirror

These obligated tasks don’t make me calm
But it’s just another day being a mom

Trapped

This aching feeling I cannot explain
That keeps me up all night, I never rest
My head, my heart, my body all in pain
From the beating torture in my chest

I provoke my eyes to make sure it’s real
And I am constantly living in fear
Like makeup, my appearance I conceal
“Honey I’m home!” I sigh, “Coming dear.”

I’m ignorant to what my future holds
How did I end up in this dreadful state
Day after day, my chosen life unfolds
I yearn to disappear, but it’s too late

It takes a lot of patience and Tylenol
To get through marriage in one piece at all

Pessimistic Love

Love is just a four letter word
That stands for emotions we feel
A rush of adrenaline and brief happiness
Hormones that persuade us “it’s” real

Love is something we heartily cling to
And succumb to its seductive conformity
We love to jump, even if short lived
After that damn romantic ideology

You want to believe there’s one person out there
Who is sweet, loving, honest, and true
You want that perfect “movie love”
That’s passionate and all the other shit too

And if you find that someone whose worthy
You force yourself to believe it’s pure
You settle with them ebcause it’s comfortable and safe
Hoping that what you think is love will endure

Love is a word we’ve associated with meaning
And in the end a waste of time
It’s full of lying, stealing, and cheating
But it’s worth being convicted of this crime
